In spite of the big potential of the large livestock population, Pakistan has not been able to exploit it to make its mark in the international meat trade as it fails to meet the required standards. The major reasons include; lack of corporate cattle farming, non-availability of indigenous meat breeds and shortage of proper modern abattoirs.
Although significantly gifted with vast marine and freshwater aquatic assets, Pakistan has failed to build upon these resources. The primary causes of these are acute water shortages, declining fish populations, unpredictable weather conditions, unavailability of suitable sites and the inherent difficulty in managing large commercial fish farming areas.
Due to hot/cold weather extremes, Pakistan lacks efficient poultry farms, creating severe shortages. The major constraints that hinder poultry production consist of inadequate health facilities, poor management practices, untrained technical human resources and large capital to invest in fully environmental controlled poultry systems.
